OCDH reports more than 280 repressive incidents in February, including 95 arbitrary detentions

MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban Observatory for Human Rights (OCDH) denounced in a statement the increase in repressive actions in Cuba, with “at least 282” registered in February alone, including “95 arbitrary detentions.”

The report, published this March 4, highlights a worrying trend in the violation of civil and political rights on the Island, which totals more than 600 incidents since the beginning of 2024.

Of the arbitrary arrests reported, a notable majority of “71 were against women and 24 against men.” In addition, the Cuban regime has been accused of committing “another 186 abuses against civilians”, a sign of the growing pressure on the population by the authorities.

The OCDH also recorded “63 complaints made for acts against political prisoners, common prisoners and their families,” which indicates a wide range of human rights violations, which affect not only the detainees but also their families.

The socioeconomic situation in Cuba further aggravates this repressive panorama. The OCDH points out that the violations of social rights reflect “the critical Cuban socioeconomic situation, marked by 88% of families in extreme poverty.”

The international community has expressed its concern about this situation. Recently, “34 MEPs in a letter to Josep Borrell, head of European diplomacy,” highlighted that the problems in Cuba “are a consequence of the structural crisis and the lack of political will of the Cuban regime to make the changes that the country needs.” ”.

In addition, they criticized the Government’s economic measures, known as “paquetazo,” which “involve sacrifices only for the population.” The continued repression in Cuba has not only caught the attention of human rights organizations and political representatives in Europe, but also has been condemned by the European Parliament, which passed a new resolution in response to the growing abuses.
