ÖVP budget spokesman: The best way to balance the budget is to prevent election sweeteners and to avoid the free play of forces – SPÖ has long since abandoned the path of a state-supporting party
Vienna (OTS) – “The People’s Party and Finance Minister Magnus Brunner are working in the interests of Austria and its taxpayers, while the SPÖ is just wandering between ever new ideas for burdens and a lack of concepts,” stressed Gabriel Obernosterer, budget spokesman for the People’s Party, in response to today’s statements by SPÖ National Council member Krainer. It is clear that the best budget consolidation measure is to prevent election sweeteners worth billions, “and we guarantee this by acting responsibly and by not allowing the free play of forces.” The calls of the Social Democrats for a budget restructuring are not without a certain irony, according to the ÖVP representative, who says: “Of all people, the SPÖ, whose ideas aired in recent months would cost more than 13 billion euros or three percent of the gross domestic product, is presenting itself as the guardian of the state budget – that is more than bold.” Added to this is the 20 billion euro “transformation fund” that SPÖ chairman Babler is promoting.
In addition, the SPÖ has constantly called for expensive and ineffective market interventions in the past years of crisis – such as VAT reductions or new taxes – while at the same time criticizing the federal government’s spending to relieve the burden and support people and the location. Obernosterer: “It must be clear to even the most die-hard Babler fans that both cannot work in terms of content.” In addition, red counter-financing concepts are not serious, “the SPÖ has already spent the potential revenue from wealth taxes more often than it would ever bring in.”
Regarding the requested publication of a letter from Brussels, Obernosterer states that the Finance Ministry has not yet received a letter from the European Commission. “Finance Minister Brunner also made it clear in the last budget committee that such a letter would be published. The SPÖ is therefore demanding something that has already been promised, just to make political change,” said the ÖVP budget spokesman.
Obernosterer concludes: “The SPÖ has long since abandoned the path of a party that once supported the state and has no concepts for Austria other than constant bad-mouthing and burdensome ideas.” (End)
