ÖBB Group Youth Representation: Further expand apprenticeship training within the Group – 2024-06-06 14:00:10

21-year-old Upper Austrian Jana Borth was unanimously elected as the new chairwoman

Vienna (OTS) Jana Borth, 21, from Upper Austria, was unanimously elected as the new chairwoman at the youth representatives’ conference in the ÖBB Group on May 6, 2024, and succeeds Pia Gsaller in this role. Borth thanked the approximately 60 youth representatives present for the great trust they had shown in her: “The apprenticeship training in the Group must be made even more attractive and the conditions for the apprentices must be further improved. The salaries of apprentices at the railways must also increase so that they can keep up with other apprenticeships,” said Borth.

Over the last two busy years, the company’s youth representatives have campaigned to ensure that apprentices who have already completed their training or have a high school diploma are paid more than the income they are entitled to in their first year of training. In addition, the company was able to set up a pilot project in the Vienna training workshop where apprentices can obtain hygiene and menstrual products free of charge – the project is to be rolled out across Austria at ÖBB, says Borth.

Sophia Ebner (Central Youth Councillor ÖBB Personenverkehr AG), Sebastian Unterweger (Central Youth Councillor Rail Cargo Group) and Anja Temmel (Central Youth Councillor Infra AG) were elected as Borth’s deputies.

Former chairwoman Gsaller wished all the new Central Youth Representatives all the best and much success in continuing the youth and apprentice work in the Group. Gsaller thanked her colleagues: “In the future, cohesion and solidarity will continue to be the basis for the Group’s youth representation to achieve as much as possible for the more than 2,000 ÖBB apprentices.”

Fabian Edlinger, Federal Chairman of vida-Jugend (youth department of the vida union), and Olivia Janisch, Deputy Chairwoman of the ÖBB Group Works Council and Deputy Chairwoman of the vida Railway Department, also congratulated Borth and the new Central Youth Representatives on their election. The union members thanked all the youth representatives for their good cooperation, their active participation in the social partnership and assured them of their continued support.

Janisch assured the conference participants that the employee representatives and the union vida are reliable partners: “Apprentices are the future skilled workers who are more urgently needed than ever due to the high personnel requirements at ÖBB. Apprenticeship training must therefore be properly expanded. Only with fair apprentice salaries and attractive training conditions can young people be recruited as apprentices,” demands Janisch.

Fabian Edlinger, Federal Chairman of vida-Jugend, congratulates on the result: “I would like to thank all youth representatives for their good cooperation and their active participation in the social partnership. This has enabled numerous improvements to be achieved for apprentices and their training. Inflation has hit young people very hard in recent years – this must be taken into account even more in the collective agreement negotiations this year.”
