Nvidia and AMD bring Microsoft AI features to gaming laptops

The first gaming laptops equipped with Microsoft’s AI Copilot+ feature will come from Asus and MSI.

“The new RTX AI PC laptops from ASUS and MSI will feature GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs and energy-efficient chips running on Windows 11 AI PC,” Nvidia said in a blog post. According to The Verge, Nvidia has confirmed that new gaming laptop models will run the latest Strix CPU from AMD.

In addition, Windows 11 AI PCs will be updated for free with Microsoft’s Copilot+, but the time may be slower than Windows devices running Arm Qualcomm architecture scheduled to launch on June 18.

Nvidia is said to be in a race to maintain AI task compatibility on laptop chips, while Microsoft is pushing to move the AI model to NPUs.

Observers say that Nvidia is focusing on building the “RTX AI laptop” brand, noting that its GPU is capable of handling heavier AI tasks than the NPU.

Currently NPUs are achieving performance levels of around 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), while Nvidia’s PC GPUs can handle more than 1,000 TOPS. Therefore, NPU is often used for small devices such as laptops to balance performance and battery life, while GPU will be used on PCs – machines that do not need to worry about battery issues.

This month, Nvidia plans to launch the RTX AI Kit, which includes tools and software development kits (SDKs) for customizing, optimizing, and deploying models. These tools will use Meta’s Llama 2 as an optimization platform with less VRAM requirements and higher performance.
