Now this is happening in your seat on the plane

A flight can be a great pleasure and a quick and convenient way to get around. But it can also turn into a nightmare.

And among the reasons there is also the possibility for passengers to fold down the backrest. An opportunity to make the journey extremely comfortable for those sitting on this seat, but not without disadvantages for those sitting behind.

Irritation

If so, this is good news.

Those developing airplane seats are on their way to creating the airplane seats of the future, which make the option of reclining by pressing the so-called recline button unnecessary. This especially applies to short- and medium-haul flights.

It is CNN that reports on the sensational development of airplane seats.

Seven quick

A new generation of super-light seats was launched for the aircraft manufacturer already 15 years ago. These seats did not have a reclining function. Instead, they were “pre-bent”, in some with an angle somewhere between fully erect and slightly added.

Initially, this was mainly aimed at low-cost companies. These companies usually operate flights that last only a few hours and are known to cut out all the extras.

The new seats could not be folded down, but had a concave “bucket shape” that allowed the rear passenger to place their knees on either side of the “bucket”, thus gaining a couple of extra centimeters of welcome space.

That’s why they do it

But does a couple of cm really mean that much?

CNN made these calculations:

There are about 30 economy class rows on an airplane like a Boeing 737 or an Airbus A320 where the previous generation of seats had a distance of 30 inches between a point on one seat and the same point on the seat in front. This is essentially your space minus the thickness of the seat itself.

If an airline manages to save three cm of space per row, in total there will be 90 cm, which is equivalent to a whole row of extra seats.

The measure of savings

Over the past decade, various seat manufacturers have launched their own pre-folded seats along with other ways to save those inches.

One of the most recognized is the German seat manufacturer Recaro, known outside the aviation industry for excellent car seats.

The internet is seething: – Absolutely sick

– The airline can choose a default seatback angle of 15 or 18 degrees during the seat configuration process, explains Recaro CEO Mark Hiller.

– This helps provide greater comfort by increasing the seatback angle or accommodates special layouts with a specific number of passengers. It also ensures lower costs, fewer moving parts on the seat, greater reliability and simplified maintenance – as well as reduced weight and cost, without the need for mechanisms and so on, says Hiller.

For air passengers in Norway, however, these are not big changes at first.

– To date we have no intention of eliminating the recline button as standard on our aircraft, SAS press manager Tonje Sund tells DinSide.

Careful

Thin seats that were previously used primarily by low-cost airlines are now also being installed on full-service airlines. One reason is that they compete directly with low-cost airlines, CNN points out.

Become a popular airline passenger

  • Check behind you before leaning back
  • Relax slowly and evenly
  • Return the seat to the upright position when everyone has had their meal, preferably without being asked by the cabin crew.

They do this, among other things, by offering extra economy class legroom for sale at the front of the economy section of the plane. These seats come with both charging capabilities and AC power outlets, while regular Economy seats can be pre-folded and have no power outlets or just a USB outlet.

This is called the hybrid section, so take this into account next time you book your plane ticket.
