The increase in cilantro is due to water problems, which reduced production, creating a shortage. Mariano Serna Muñoz, president of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) in Torreón, pointed out that the price is currently exorbitant, since it has risen up to 2000 percent.

“The Mexican diet is a lot of cilantro, so it is going to be affected a little, for all the merchants who sell tacos, which carry cilantro and onion, onion is also expensive, avocado is also expensive, they have increased a lot the inputs that come from the countryside specifically, that also generates a detriment to the Mexican economy,” he commented.

He mentioned that the kilo of cilantro was in 40 pesos and then it reached 200, 500, and in some cities up to 800 pesos, that is, it was an exponential increase.

He referred to the avocado and indicated that there was already an agreement with the government of Michoacán and the United States so that they could export again, as long as the inspectors were taken care of, but the conflict also led to million-dollar losses for a week, just like what happened with the handle.

“Those losses, at the end of the day, are going to end up being passed on to the price of local consumption, if those losses are going to be passed on to all of us,” he commented.
