Not in person, Emirati beggars are begging on Facebook-Instagram – 2024-03-15 11:48:46

Beggars in the UAE have started begging in a novel way, ditching the traditional methods. Emirati beggars have now started begging on social media instead of going to people’s homes or businesses, Abu Dhabi Police said.

Police in Abu Dhabi have warned the common people that the beggars are trying to get benefits by exploiting the sympathy of the common people in view of the holy month of Ramadan. The most worrying thing is that the beggars no longer go to the door, the street or the shopping mall to ask for alms. They are now begging online.

The warning message also said that after the start of Ramadan, beggars started begging on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp. They are usually begging by exchanging messages, human pictures and all the words that prompt them to give money. In these cases, it is said to help orphans, treat the sick, build mosques and schools in poor countries.

Begging is a punishable offense in the Emirates. If a person is caught begging, a fine of 5,000 dirhams and three months imprisonment are provided. And if someone begs without being a real beggar, more severe measures are taken against him.

In a statement, the police said that begging is a reprehensible act. Let’s work together to eradicate begging. Avoid people who are begging on social media.

Abu Dhabi Police urges citizens to refrain from sending or transferring money to unknown people. Moreover, the police asked everyone to cooperate in dealing with this ‘dangerous’ situation.
