“Not for those who love sport, but for those who can afford it!” Not everyone can afford to visit the Paris Olympics

In the corridors of politicians there is still discussion about whether civilized countries should participate in a sport in which the organizers, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), have allowed the participation of apparently neutral athletes from the aggressor countries Russia and Belarus, but we hope that at least for for a while sports will be separated from politics and the world will be able to enjoy the greatest sports festival. Meanwhile, new criticisms are being launched against the IOC and the organizers of the Games (the French Olympic Committee).

On the Paris Olympic Games website you can already find the ticket prices for the competitions, which will be the most expensive ever in these sports forums. Both the minimum and maximum ticket prices will be higher than those of the most expensive games so far – in 2012 in London. The lowest ticket price will be 24 euros, while the highest will reach 990 euros. The greatest breadth is observed precisely in the athletics competition of the queen of sport, where some preliminaries at the “Stade de France” stadium at the highest levels of the final sectors will cost 24 euros, while some finals in the best seats for 990 euros (the seats worst for these finals are also available for 85 euros, the other ticket price categories for the main events are 195 euros, 385 euros and 690 euros).

The president of the World Athletics Union, Sebastian Ko, is outraged by this policy and has no objections to the higher ticket prices, but to the fact that not all those who want to see athletics as a whole, which would prevent reach a young audience in person: “We ask for balance. There will always be a higher price for tickets, but it is important that in our stadiums there are people who love our sport, not just those who can afford to attend the Olympic Games” , Ko said in a conversation with the British media, who added that the Paris Games will be the most expensive ever not only for the fans, but also for the international federations.

Tony Estangue, president of the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games, said that their goal is to equal the ticket price of the London and Tokyo Olympics (in 2021 the games were held in the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic, without spectators “One one of the factors that can distort the perception of prices is inflation”, explains the organizer.

Many friends of Latvian sport may certainly be interested in basketball competitions, for which our national team can also qualify. Here the ticket prices for the preliminaries range from 24 to 150 euros, the playoffs from 80 to 280 euros and the finals from 125 to 980 euros per ticket. It will also cost a lot to attend the 3×3 basketball competition, where ticket prices range from 24 to 150 euros, as will the beach volleyball preliminaries, while attending the final “on the beach” and the bronze medal match live will cost from 100 to 480 euros. Prices quite similar even in classic volleyball. Meanwhile, tickets for the preliminaries of the football competition will cost from 24 to 100 euros, and for the final from 80 to 300 euros, but it is worth remembering that the national Under 23 team with no more than three players in total age participates in football Olympic. Prices for handball competitions will be similar to those of football, but the tennis preliminaries on the Roland Garros courts will range from 30 to 120 euros, and the two finals from 125 to 420 euros.

If a family wants to dedicate a few days to attending a sporting competition, and perhaps even more than one event a day, the figure amounts to quite impressive.

Since the first tickets went on sale in February 2023, there has been a lot of talk that, given the current state of the world economy, the 2024 Paris Olympics could be the most expensive Olympics in many respects.

Protests and criticism are aimed not only against ticket prices, but also against high hotel prices and the increase in various taxes for tourists. Recently, the French Consumer Association published data showing that hotel prices increased significantly during the Olympic Games. Already in the autumn, hotel prices had increased by more than 300% and it can be assumed that they will continue to grow, because at the beginning of December in some places the increase was already 500%.

Sports organizations have called for the equalization of ticket prices to ensure maximum participation in stadiums. At the same time, they called on the authorities of the French capital to strengthen control and monitoring to prevent overbooking.

Paris is preparing for an influx of more than 3 million visitors during the Olympics, with more than 7 million estimated tickets sold for the events.
