Northbound bridge not to be completed until 2032, construction to begin quickly ‘unrealistic’

It is not yet possible to start construction of the IJ bridge during this coalition period. This is what councilor Melanie van der Horst (Traffic) writes in response to a proposal from several city councillors.

The proposal came from Zeeger Ernsting (GroenLinks) and former councilors Dennis Boutkan and Tiers Bakker (SP). In April 2021 they asked the municipality to “accelerate implementation now”, i.e. in the middle of the 2022-2026 coalition period. But Van der Horst writes today that it is “unrealistic to expect that construction of the Oostbrug can begin during this municipal period.”

Doable

According to Van der Horst, the so-called implementation decision cannot be presented to city councilors before 2026. It will then be clear whether construction from 2029 onwards will be “feasible” and whether the bridge can be completed in 2032.

It remains to be seen whether the bridge will be built. It previously appeared that 300 million euros would be needed for construction, but the project costs are expected to increase by 10.5 million euros. The Municipality itself wants to allocate only a third, i.e. 100 million euros.

Furthermore, at present, the Transport Region wants to pay 75 million euros, although Van der Horst hopes that this amount will increase. This means that 125 million euros are needed from the, as the municipality previously called them, “partners”.

Public employees who work on the bridge, among other things, will be able to continue to do so in the coming years. A “key risks” document has been drawn up. In addition to the lack of money, for example, the “nitrogen issue”, possible protests from residents and the possibility of not finding a suitable operation for the bridge could hinder the construction of the bridge.
