North Korea reportedly forced hundreds of residents to watch the execution of a man in extremely cold weather, minus 15 degrees Celsius.
Radio Free Asia reported that North Korea executed a man in front of hundreds of residents for killing a woman while trying to steal nuts from the North Korean woman.
Hundreds of people gathered at the authorities of Kim Jong Un’s regime to witness the execution of the 23-year-old man who killed the woman.
“On the morning of the 19th, the day of the public execution, the provincial social security issued an order for local residents to gather at Hyesan Airport at 2 pm,” said a resident of Ryanggang Province whose identity is been hidden. RFA.
“We had to stand for two hours at a temperature of minus 15 degrees Celsius, enduring the cold wind in an empty, white, snow-covered field,” he added.
The man had previously been found guilty of killing the woman and attempting to steal 10 kilograms of nuts worth IDR 92,000 from her.
The defendant was then executed by a North Korean firing squad in the presence of hundreds of North Koreans.
The execution was carried out at Hyesan Airport, North Korea.
The man was taken from prison to the middle of a field, then immediately killed by a firing squad.
“Authorities say the young man who was shot dead committed the murder while trying to steal 10 kilograms of walnuts one night late last month,” a North Korean resident said.
In North Korea, 10 kilograms of nuts cost up to 50 thousand won, or the equivalent of IDR 92 thousand. This sum can cover a family’s food needs for a week.
A total of 12 other people were sentenced to 10 years in prison for crimes including robbery, fraud, forgery, attempting to escape North Korea and drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, Hyesan Airport was previously the site where nine defendants were executed in August on beef smuggling charges. Another defendant was executed in September for stealing penicillin.
