Noah and Julia were the most popular baby names in the Netherlands last year. Riley was the most gender-neutral name, or the name most evenly split between boys and girls.
In 2023, 888 boys were given the name Noah, according to data from the Social Insurance Bank (SVB). The originally Hebrew name is the most popular for the fifth consecutive year. The list of girls’ names is headed by Julia: 681 children were named that way.
After Noah, the names Luca and Lucas were given more often to boys last year. But if we consider the different spellings of Muhammad, the Arabic name fades into the background. Last year, a total of 721 children were named Mohammed, Mohamed, Mohammad, Mohamad, Muhammed or Muhammad.
Noud is a newcomer to the top ten popular boys’ names. Last year, 567 children were nominated this way. Levi also gained popularity: the name went from ninth to fifth place.
Among female names, Olivia is in second place and Mila follows in third. Julia also took first place in 2021. In 2022, Emma was the most popular, but last year that name was in fourth place.
Riley is the most gender-neutral name
According to SVB, Riley was the most gender-neutral name. It was assigned to 84 girls and 82 boys and is therefore not tied to a specific gender. Sky and Jonne are in second and third place respectively. The SVB emphasizes that these are not the most popular names, but names that occur more or less with the same frequency between boys and girls.
“Names in the top ten are given to only 7% of all newborns,” says homologist Gerrit Bloothooft of Utrecht University. “A total of around 13,000 different girls’ names and 11,500 different boys’ names are given each year.”
