Chinese President Xi Jinping, during his participation in the extraordinary virtual BRICS summit on the Palestinian issue, stressed that all parties to the conflict must end hostilities and achieve a ceasefire immediately.
Xi called on the parties to stop all violence and attacks targeting civilians, release civilian detainees, and avoid further loss of life and suffering of the population, stressing the need to maintain safe and unhindered humanitarian corridors, in addition to providing more humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.
The Chinese President pointed out that the international community must take practical measures to prevent the expansion of the circle of conflict and prevent the stability of the entire Middle East from being endangered, stressing that the only way to break the cycle of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict lies in the two-state solution, the restoration of the Palestinian people’s legitimate national rights, and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine.
He said that China calls for a more authoritative international peace conference to build international consensus for peace and work toward an early solution to the Palestinian issue that is comprehensive, just and sustainable.
He added that this is the first summit since the expansion of the BRICS group, noting that given the current circumstances, the call for justice and peace on the Palestinian-Israeli issue is very important and comes at a very appropriate time.
He pointed out that China is deeply concerned that the conflict in Gaza, which is entering its second month, will cause heavy civilian casualties and a humanitarian disaster and will expand and spread.
He explained that the collective punishment of the people of Gaza, through forced displacement or cutting off water, electricity and fuel, must stop, and all parties must work to implement the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council through concrete measures on the ground.
The root cause of the deteriorating situation in occupied Palestine, according to the Chinese president, is the fact that the rights of the Palestinian people to statehood, existence and return have long been ignored, noting that there can be no sustainable peace and security in the Middle East without a just solution to the Palestine issue.
Xi said that since the outbreak of the Palestine-Israel conflict, China has been actively promoting peace talks and achieving a ceasefire, and has provided humanitarian aid to help alleviate the humanitarian plight in Gaza and will provide more supplies and assistance according to the needs of the people in Gaza.
As the rotating president of the Security Council, China has moved to facilitate the adoption of the resolution calling for humanitarian truces, extended humanitarian corridors, protection of civilians and provision of humanitarian assistance, according to the Chinese president, who, in the context, praised the BRICS cooperation mechanism as an important platform for emerging markets and developing countries to enhance solidarity, cooperation and safeguard common interests, noting that the meeting to coordinate positions and actions on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict represents a good start for greater BRICS cooperation after its expansion.
