According to Mr. Nga, the coast at the eastern end of the runway is a coral habitat, and sea turtles occasionally come to lay eggs. Watching coral and watching sea turtles lay eggs are also two of the most unique tourism products of Con Dao.
Mr. Nguyen Bach Tung (aviation planning expert) said that Con Dao airport was formed during the French period, with its current location being very narrow in width but being a rare flat place on the whole island.
Therefore, extending the runway has always been a difficult problem for experts over the years. There is no way to extend the runway without negatively affecting the environment.
In addition, the construction of a large airport here also needs to be carefully considered, in the context of the increase in tourists in the past few years that has put pressure on the island’s natural environment.
Regarding the passenger terminal of Con Dao airport, the Ministry of Transport proposed to build a new terminal with a capacity of 2 million passengers/year, costing about 2,100 billion VND. This project was assigned to Ba Ria – Vung Tau province to implement under the form of public-private partnership.
