Nilüfer Public Health Days have begun

BURSA – Nilüfer Municipality is organizing the 3-day Nilüfer Public Health Days during Public Health Week. In the event where citizens are given free health screening, information is provided on healthy living and various activities are carried out.

Nilüfer Public Health Days, organized by Nilüfer Municipality in order to raise awareness about public health and preventive health services, has begun with a ceremony. Nilüfer Municipality Deputy Mayor Salih Güleç; Nilüfer Municipality Deputy Mayors Okan Şahin, Zerrin Güleş, Serpil Altun, Tezcan Öztürk; Nilüfer Municipality Council Members Furkan Yavuz, İrfan Özer, Demirhan Aslan, Resul Tarman; Nilbel A.Ş. Board Chairman İbrahim Mart, Bursa Provincial Health Directorate Public Health Services Deputy Chairman Dr. Yunuz Arslan, Bursa Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine Public Health Department Head Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Türkan and a large number of citizens attended the opening ceremony held at Nilüfer Municipality Dr. Ceyhun İrgil Health Museum and Social Support Services Directorate Service Building.

Speaking at the opening of the program, Nilüfer Deputy Mayor Okan Şahin reminded that September 3-9 were celebrated as “Public Health Week” in order to emphasize the importance of public health and preventive health services and to make the work carried out more visible. Şahin stated that local governments have important responsibilities regarding public health, and listed these as raising citizens’ awareness about preventive health services, conducting awareness activities on important days and weeks, improving health literacy, ensuring and facilitating citizens’ access to health services provided by the state, and providing basic health services to citizens who are unable to go to health institutions.

Şahin, who stated that Nilüfer Public Health Days will be held on September 5-6-7, said, “We aim to perform many screenings such as eye screening, hearing test, carbon monoxide measurement, body mass index measurement, blood sugar and blood pressure measurement for our citizens living in Nilüfer, to provide information in different branches at the stands we set up, to share various experiences in our workshops, and to increase awareness in health with training and seminars to be given by experts in the field. The health literacy of our citizens is very valuable to us. It is a saddening issue for us to see that health literacy in Turkey is unfortunately at the primary school 2 level. As Nilüfer Municipality, we will do our best to develop and increase this. We would like to thank the institutions and organizations that support us.”

Bursa Provincial Health Directorate Public Health Services Deputy Director Dr. Yunuz Arslan reminded that health services that combat all kinds of environmental and structural risk factors that negatively affect the health of individuals and society are public health services. Underlining that municipalities provide important services in this sense, Arslan emphasized the importance of the program.

Following the speeches, Nilüfer Public Health Days began. Participants in the three-day program will be able to have health screenings, visit stands on different topics to get information, and benefit from workshops, training, and seminars.
