Nigeria takes charge of AU peace and security council

The African Union (AU), reported in this Thursday (5), at your headquarters, in Addis Ababa, that Nigeria assumed the one-month rotating presidency of the Community bloc’s Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC), Prensa Latina reported.

According to the AU, Nigeria’s permanent representative to the AU, Bankole Adeoye, replaces Zackariaou Maiga, permanent ambassador of Niger, who held the position during last March.

Nigeria’s presidency of the body will be crucial in addressing the threats posed by nuclear weapons and the imperative to prevent terrorists from gaining access to these devices of mass destruction and their control regimes, including the urgent need to promote the peaceful use of energy nuclear, similarly, will prioritize the operability of the African Reserve Force, which is an important element in the architecture of African peace and security, and the sustainable financing of AU peace support operations.

The Peace and Security Council is the permanent decision-making body of the African Union, modeled on the United Nations Security Council, to implement the decisions of the Union, particularly in matters related to peacekeeping and regional and continental security.

Its members are elected by the African Union Assembly to reflect regional balance, as well as a variety of criteria, including the ability to contribute militarily and financially to the Union.

The body is made up of 15 countries, five of which are elected for periods of three years and ten for periods of two years.

The current members are Angola, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Liberia, Morocco, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Togo, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Zambia and Congo Brazzaville.
