An owl that escaped from a zoo recently died of rat poison has sparked widespread criticism in New York. A large number of venom samples were found in the carcass of the owl named Flako. Since then, environmentalists and rights activists have demanded a ban on rat killing by poisoning.

Sean Abreu, a New York City Council member and chairman of the city’s Sanitation and Waste Management Committee, introduced a new bill last Thursday. It proposed birth control instead of toxic chemicals to control the millions of rats hiding in the city’s Metrorail stations and vacant lots.

Officials say none of the traps or poison baits used so far have been completely successful in reducing the rat population. In the past, authorities tried to administer contraceptive drugs to rats. But it didn’t work. Now the US city wants to try to control the birth of rats again.
