A new wiretapping scandal shakes up Brussels and brings the issue of illegal software and surveillance back to the European forefront. This time three confirmed targets were found, an employee and two MEPs, members of the Security and Defense Subcommittee of the European Parliament. This is the president of the committee, the French Phileleftheri Natalie Loiseauon whose cellphone Pegasus spyware was found, and for the Social Democrat MEP from Bulgaria Elena Yonceva, who is a member of the same subcommittee. For understandable reasons, the European Parliament’s security services have already asked the rest of its members to hand over their devices for inspection since Wednesday afternoon. And I learn that among those who are being checked is also Nikos Papandreou.
