After officials in charge of national security requested the Legislative Assembly to extend the state of emergency for 30 days, 57 deputies approved the request.
The purpose of extending the implementation of this important security tool from August 9 to September 7 is to continue protecting the lives and property of the Salvadoran population.
“So far, we have more than 80,000 people arrested, 678 days without homicides during President Nayib Bukele’s administration, of which 565 have been during the state of emergency,” said parliamentarian Raúl Chamagua. “In this month of August, we have had four days without homicides and in 2024 a total of 160 days without a murder being recorded,” he added.
In the 14th plenary session, some legislators from Nuevas Ideas took up a publication made by President Nayib Bukele on his X account: “In the first presidential term, they gave us absolute confidence and with the help of God, we achieved a miracle that has left the world perplexed…”
In this regard, Deputy Walter Coto stressed that important work has been done on the issue of security by state institutions.
“There has been a substantial change in terms of security. Since June 2019, with the Territorial Control Plan, President Bukele began to attack a criminal phenomenon that was so organized, that had so much control in the territories and even with a degree of hierarchy,” said the parliamentarian.
According to Coto, the gangs tried to prevent the plan from working and there have even been entities that, today, protect the criminals. That is why it was necessary to speed up the process of capturing gang members and that is when the exceptional regime was implemented.
The application of this measure is based on Article 29 of the Constitution of the Republic, which empowers the Government to establish a regime of exception in cases of war, invasion of territory, rebellion, sedition, catastrophe, epidemic or other general calamity, or serious disturbances to public order.
“This is a constitutional mechanism that has brought so many benefits to Salvadorans, because today young people and their parents do not fear the peace and tranquility that we have. Little by little, we have been achieving what is called ‘the miracle of El Salvador’,” said Deputy Coto.
