Al-Hadath – The file of Hannibal Gaddafi, son of the late Libyan Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who has been detained in Lebanon since December 2015, is witnessing developments that those familiar with the case describe as “positive” and which may lead to his release.
According to exclusive information from Al Arabiya.net, an official Libyan delegation is preparing to return to Beirut again this week, after a short visit a few days ago during which it met with the Lebanese Minister of Justice, Judge Henry Khoury, where the meeting discussed the implementation of the memorandum of understanding that was signed between the two countries in March 2014. , before the Libyan delegation was forced to return to Tripoli before the specified date, for emergency reasons.
Stuck for years
Informed sources reported to Al Arabiya.net that the two delegations’ discussions focused mainly on the issue of the disappearance of Imam Musa al-Sadr and his two companions, Sheikh Muhammad Yaqoub and journalist Abbas Badr al-Din, who disappeared in Libya in 1978. This is the outstanding issue between the two countries, the result of which was the absence of diplomatic representation between Tripoli and the West. And Beirut.
She also indicated that “the Libyan delegation expressed positive cooperation in the file of the disappearance of Al-Sadr and his two companions, whose fate the Lebanese side insists on revealing, which would facilitate Gaddafi’s case.” She explained, “The letter sent by the Libyan Public Prosecutor months ago, in which he expressed cooperation in the file of Al-Sadr and his two companions, once again opened the door to official communication between the two countries.”
Although the informed sources were keen to emphasize “that there is no connection between the Al-Sadr file and Gaddafi,” they indicated, on the other hand, that “the title of the meetings between the two delegations was cooperation on the file on Al-Sadr and his two companions and research into the Hannibal case as well.”
She also stressed that “any progress in these two files does not mean that the other file will be resolved, and vice versa.”
Positive atmosphere
In turn, the sources of the official follow-up committee on the case of the disappearance of Al-Sadr and his two companions (the Lebanese prosecution team) explained to Al-Arabiya.net: “The atmosphere is positive, considering that the only way to address the Gaddafi case is through the Lebanese judiciary, and not through media exaggeration or financial offers, and this is what We told all the mediators (states and individuals) who were involved in the case.”
In addition, she believed that “just as the Libyan state has the right to ask about the fate of one of its citizens, the Lebanese party has the right to know the fate of the hidden Imam and his two companions.”
“Available and important information”
As for the health condition of Gaddafi’s son, information revealed that he “suspended his hunger strike since last October 2023.”
The sources confirmed, “Gaddafi is still in the interrogation stage, and the conditions of his detention are very respectable. He receives his family, who recently settled in Lebanon, on a regular basis, and he was not subjected to any physical or psychological torture.”
She also revealed that “Hannibal is not being prosecuted for a crime he committed when he was a two-year-old child, as is claimed, but rather because he provided “abundant and important” information about Al-Sadr and his two companions, but he was careful not to complete it, so an arrest warrant was issued against him for the crime of concealing information.”
The Lebanese judiciary charged Gaddafi’s son with “concealing information related to the fate of Imam al-Sadr and his two companions and participating in the crime of concealing them, without a trial session being scheduled for him yet.”
However, Hannibal repeated more than once that he was a child at the time of their disappearance in Libya, and that he did not have any information.
It is noteworthy that Gaddafi’s son went on a hunger strike early last summer to protest the Lebanese judiciary’s continued detention and mistreatment of him. He was hospitalized several times due to the deterioration of his health.
The young man maintains his innocence in the case of Al-Sadr’s disappearance, and he repeatedly said during the investigations that he does not have any information because the incident happened when he was a child, and that his disappearance is known only to his older brother, Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, and the former Libyan Prime Minister, Abdul Salam Jalloud, along with his father’s relative, Ahmed Gaddaf Al-Dam, who lives in Cairo and former Foreign Minister Musa Kusa.
A few days ago, Human Rights Watch condemned his continued detention, calling on the Lebanese authorities to release him. Especially since the man has been detained for nine years in Lebanon for the crime of concealing information after he was arrested in December 2015 when he served as a “political refugee” in Syria, before he was kidnapped from there and handed over to the Lebanese authorities.
