The Festival Cine of Women, FEMCINEreturns to Santiago from September 3 to 8, offering a varied selection of films made by female directors from Chile and around the world.
The 14th edition of FEMCINE will feature award-winning feature-length and short films, both fiction and documentary and animation, from Latin American and European countries with their recent cinematography directed by women.
This year FEMCINE It will have 8 venues: the National Film Library of Chile, Cinemark Portal Ñuñoa, Centro Arte Alameda – Sala Ceina, Cultural Center of Spain in Chile, Nicanor Parra Library of the Diego Portales University, Matucana 100 Cultural Center, House of Culture of Ñuñoa and the K Room of the Universidad Mayor.

The spotlights and sections outside the competition are:
Opening and closing film
The opening film will be available to the public on Saturday, September 7 at 6 p.m. at Cinemark, Portal Ñuñoa.
“Gloria!” (Margherita Vicario, 106′, Italy/Switzerland, 2024). The year is 1800; the place is the Colegio Sant Ignazio, an old and decrepit music institute for girls, somewhere near Venice. Saturday, September 7, 6:00 p.m., Cinemark, Portal Ñuñoa, Ñuñoa.
Meanwhile, the closing film will be the expected one “The Substance” and will be shown for free at the Cineteca Nacional. It will be a great opportunity to finally see the film that shocked audiences at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Starring Demi Moore, it centers on a revolutionary product based on cell division, which is consumed by a woman who wants to be younger, more beautiful and perfect. It is an explosive, controversial and risky film that will not leave anyone indifferent.
PANORAMA
The Panorama section aims to look at the current state of the cine made by women around the world, with stories from different latitudes, which reveal the different concerns of women filmmakers, both in terms of themes and aesthetics. This year, the program focuses on films that have won awards and/or have been selected at important festivals, which allows us to get closer to the most recent production of the cine European.
The films in this section are:
ANIMAL by Sofia Exarchous (Greece, Austria, Romania, Cyprus, Bulgaria). Under the hot Greek sun, the entertainers of an all-inclusive hotel on the island are preparing for the busy tourist season. Official selection at the International Film Festival Cine from Locarno. Wednesday 4 September, 18:30, Centro Arte Alameda, Sala CEINA.
BERNADETTE by Léa Domenach (France) With Catherine Deneuve. Film about Bernadette Chirac, wife of former French president Jacques Chirac. There will be two screenings: Thursday, September 5, 7:30 p.m., Cinemark Portal Ñuñoa. Friday, September 6, 7:30 p.m., Microcine, Cineteca Nacional.
CLUB ZERO by Jessica Hausner (Austria) Miss Novak is a teacher who joins the team of an elite school to teach nutrition to young students. Saturday 07 September, 20:00 hrs. Cineteca Nacional.
THE SINGLE by Paloma Zapata (Spain, Germany). This documentary follows the story of Antonia Singla who went on stage without hearing the music. At the age of 17 she captivated the audience. Half a century later, a young woman sets out to find Antonia to discover the roots of La Singla’s passion. Performances Wednesday 04 September, 19:30 hrs, Centro Cultural de España. Saturday 07 September, 18:00 hrs, Matucana 100.
SEVEN WINTERS IN TEHRAN by Steffi Niederzoll (Germany | France) Tehran, 2007. Reyhaneh Jabbari, 19, has a business meeting with a new client. When he tries to rape her, she stabs him in self-defense. That same day she is arrested for murder. The film traces the fate of a young woman who has become a symbol of resistance and the fight for women’s rights beyond Iran’s borders. Screenings: Wednesday, September 4, 18:00 hrs, Matucana 100. Saturday 07 September, 19:30 hrs, Microcinema, National Film Library.
LAND OF OUR MOTHERS by Liz Lobato (Spain) Rosario is an elderly lady who lives on the outskirts of a village in La Mancha with Ofelio, her disabled son, her donkey and her goat. Performances: Thursday 5 September, 7:30 p.m. Centro Cultural de España. Friday 6 September, 8:00 p.m. Matucana 100.
JULIANA ROJAS SPOTLIGHT
Brazilian director Juliana Rojas is one of the guests at FEMCINE14. She has stood out for her portrayal of contemporary Brazil, mixing everyday stories with genre elements such as horror and fantasy, resulting in a unique style and approach that distinguishes her. The titles that are part of this focus on FEMCINE and what the director will be presenting in the room are: Good manners, City; Campo, Symphony of the Necropolis.
PIONEERS
Pioneers seeks to rescue essential films from emblematic filmmakers, who have been key to the visibility and development of cine made by women. In this first year, one of the most outstanding and successful films of the year is being shown. cine Latin American film, “Camila”, directed by a key figure in the region’s cinematography and who has promoted the work of women in the audiovisual field, María Luisa Bemberg. 40 years after the premiere of “Camila”, we exhibited in FEMCINE This classic in its restored version. Saturday 7 September, 18:00 hrs, Cineteca Nacional.
FOCO THEY TURN
Elles Tournent is the driving force behind a project entitled “Graines de cinéastes” (“Filmmakers’ hotbed”), which aims to focus on first works. The films in focus are: En éclats, Lilith, Caline, Villa Madjo, Selma.
COUNTRY FOCUS: PERU
Following the interest in knowing and bringing cinematography from the region to the national public, FEMCINE This year, the film focuses on Peru, a culturally and geographically close country from which, however, few film productions arrive. The films are: Misión Kipi, COMPARTESPACIOS, No hay vuelta a casa, Las capilares.
NEW DIRECTORS
Section focused on getting to know new Chilean directors, who have taken on the making of their films independently or in academic settings. These are first films that allow us to get to know filmmakers in their first steps in filmmaking, but who, from this initial stage in their careers, display a deep perspective to delve into contingent themes that range from the intimate to the social. The films are: Sariri by Laura Donoso, Donde el cielo toca tierra by Lola Contreras Bustamante, Inche Machi by Alison Ninoska, La caída by Josefina Flores.
SHE WITH THEM
They with them is a section that seeks to investigate the cine with a lesbian theme, which is still less represented in LGBTIQ+ themed production. The films are: Go Fish, One Dances, the Other Doesn’t, and Strange Language.
