New dispute between Petro and mayors of Medellin and Bogota

Petro and Fico: A confrontation over EPM and conflicts of interest

The first episode of the day took place between President Petro and the mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez. Petro harshly questioned Gutiérrez on several issues. The president asked if the mayor recognized his authority as president and reproached him for the significant losses that, according to him, have affected Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) due to operations with UNE during the previous administration.. In addition, Petro suggested that Gutiérrez’s involvement in ISA matters could present a conflict of interest, given that his sister holds a relevant position in the company.

Gutiérrez responded firmly, defending his administration and clarifying the facts. The mayor stressed that EPM’s deterioration occurred in the previous four years, under the administration of Daniel Quintero, a close ally of President Petro. According to Gutiérrez, UNE’s accumulated losses amounted to $2.4 billion, and EPM had to receive a capitalization of $600 billion to avoid a possible liquidation. In addition, the mayor dismissed the accusations about his sister, stating that she works at an ISA subsidiary and not at the parent company, and that there is no conflict of interest.
