Despite heavy rain, the water level of the mysterious lake “hanging” in a cave in Quang Binh suddenly dropped 2m. The water receded, and a stalactite seemed to be dropped from the ceiling of the cave, floating on the surface of the lake.
On May 24, Mr. Le Luu Dung, Director of Jungle Boss Co., Ltd., a tourism operator in Quang Binh, said that the unit’s expedition team had just surveyed more about the mysterious lake in the sub-branch of the park. Thung cave, part of Hung Thoong cave system (Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park).
This lake has a surface area of about 100m2, surrounded by stalactite columns, located about 1km from the cave entrance.

What’s special is that the lake is located about 15m higher than the underground river in the cave, so it looks like it’s “hanging” on the cave wall. Because of this, the survey team temporarily named the lake Suspended Lake.
According to Mr. Dung, during this return, the survey team suddenly discovered that the water level in the lake had dropped about 2 meters, even though in recent days, there had been heavy rain around the Thung cave area.

Currently, the expedition team has not yet found the source of the lake’s inlet and outlet water. According to initial surveys, the lake may be deeper than 10m. When the water receded, the expedition team discovered a stalactite as if it had been dropped from the ceiling of the cave, floating on the surface of the lake.
Hung Thoong cave system is one of the most pristine places of Phong Nha – Ke Bang. Hung in Phong Nha people’s language means valley.
The Hung Thoong system or Thoong valley is very unique and special with many caves located deep in the strictly protected area of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, surrounded by a million-year-old limestone mountain system. and primary forests.
The only way to reach these caves is to walk along the paths in the forest. In early 2023, the People’s Committee of Quang Binh province has allowed the trial operation of the “Discover Hung Thoong” tour.
