New Delhi: 10th National Handloom Day celebrations to be held tomorrow

New Delhi New Delhi: The 10th National Handloom Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 7 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will be the chief guest on the occasion, a press release said. Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh and Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita will attend the event. Parliamentarians, eminent personalities, designers, industry representatives and exporters, senior government officials as well as over 1000 weavers from across the country will attend the event.

Sant Kabir Awards and National Handloom Awards will be presented to handloom weavers for their outstanding contribution to the handloom sector during the ceremony. The award catalogue and the coffee table book- “Parampara- Sustainability in India’s Handloom Traditions” will be released by the Vice President of India. Inspired by the vision of the Prime Minister, the Government started celebrating National Handloom Day, the first event of which was held on 7th August, 2015. The date was specifically chosen to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on 7th August, 1905 and to encourage indigenous industries, particularly handloom weavers.
According to the release, National Handloom Day seeks to provide inspiration and a sense of pride to the handloom industry by honouring handloom weavers and appreciating their contribution to the cultural, traditional and economic landscape of the country. The celebrations aim to create awareness about the significance of the handloom sector and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the country. As part of the 10th National Handloom Day celebrations, various activities are being organised in all states/UTs across the country. State governments, Weavers Service Centres under the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handloom), apex handloom bodies, educational institutions including the National Institute of Fashion Technology and Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, National Handloom Development Corporation, National Crafts Museum, etc are organising various activities.
