New animal species in Poland. They may appear this year

Due to global warming, more and more animals are appearing in Poland. Not all of them are invasive, but we shouldn’t be surprised when we see, for example, jackals or tarantulas in our country.

The first reports of the appearance of jackals in Poland date back to 2015 and were not taken very seriously. These are animals associated mainly with Africa (and rightly so, if we are talking about jackals). However, in Europe (especially in the Balkan Peninsula), golden jackals are quite common and this species most likely resides permanently in Poland as well. Interestingly, from a species perspective, the golden jackal is actually not a jackal but a wolf. However, the common name in Poland has already been accepted.

The migration of these predators most likely began years ago, but its extent has not been well studied. According to experts, due to increasing global warming, golden jackals will increasingly inhabit the northern regions of Europe. This means that the golden jackal could soon join the red fox and gray wolf that live naturally in our country.

New animal species in Poland

It is not known whether the golden jackal will permanently establish itself in Poland in 2024, but attempts to stop the migration of this species have so far not had much effect. With climate change, new parrot species could also establish themselves in Poland (few people know that we already have parrots in Poland – the Ring-necked Parakeet has been part of the Polish fauna since 2018). One of these could be the monk parrot, an extremely cold-resistant parrot that lives in Italy, France and Belgium.

The fauna of the Mediterranean Sea may move quickly to Poland and this year we may welcome more interesting species from this region. This includes, among others: on bats, such as the thermophilic bat, called the desert bat. New species of collared grass snakes, slow worms and Balkan frogs are also found in increasing numbers in Poland. Staying between reptiles and amphibians, it is also worth mentioning two invasive species of turtles: the ornamental turtle and the common snapping turtle, which can be dangerous for humans.

New species of spiders are also emerging, some of which could be dangerous to humans. Fortunately, it doesn’t look like these species will be as deadly as the Hercules we recently wrote about. However, in our country you can find, among others: the armed echidna, the Ukrainian tarantula or the “Nosferatu” spider. Each of them arrived in Poland “with the help” of man, but will settle permanently only if climatic conditions are favorable.
