The fire that started on Saturday in Amarbunia area of Sundarbans has spread over an area of about two and a half kilometers in two days. Chief Forest Conservator Amir Hossain Chowdhury visited the spot on Sunday (May 4) afternoon.
At that time, the top officials of the local administration were with him. After the visit, he held a meeting with everyone about what to do. After the meeting, Amir Hossain Chowdhury is scheduled to hold a briefing with journalists about the fire.

Meanwhile, the Navy, Coast Guard, Fire Service, Police, Forest Department, local volunteers and villagers worked in the area from Sunday morning to afternoon to extinguish the fire. An Air Force helicopter also provided water to douse the fire. The fire extinguishing work was stopped from evening. Work will resume from Monday morning.

However, the forest department officials said that the fire has not been extinguished but it is currently under control. The fire does not burn large plants, it burns fallen leaves, small leafy shrubs. The forest department claims that there is no risk of much damage to the forest.
Lt Commander Arafatul Arefin of Mongla’s Digraj Naval Base said fire lines had already been cut to prevent the fire from spreading. However, it will take another two to three days to completely extinguish the fire, which is burning isolated and scattered in different places.
