Netflix puts ads and in-app purchases in its free games

Selular.ID – When you visit the Netflix Games Help Center page on the streamer’s website, the first bullet point says: “No ads. There are no additional costs. There are no in-app purchases.”

All three promises could be broken in the near future as Netflix looks for new ways to generate revenue.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Netflix executives are determined to make money from the mobile games they have launched over the past two years.

Currently, every title on Netflix Games is completely free for subscribers.

Netflix even removed all in-app purchases and advertising from some of these games before relaunching them as part of the service.

The user cannot pay for more levels or new characters even if they want to.

To start profiting from games, Netflix executives have floated ideas like adding in-app purchases, paying for larger releases, and placing ads in games for Netflix customers on the Standard plan.

As the report notes, this isn’t the first time Netflix has changed course on a long-standing policy.

For years, the company resisted advertising, but once growth stalled, ad-supported plans quickly followed.

The same goes for Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing.

Some of you may be wondering why Netflix doesn’t provide in-app purchases and advertising. Because in-app purchases are the heart of this industry.

Free-to-play games with IAP, such as Honor of Kings, PUBG MOBILE, Pokemon Go, and Genshin Impact generate hundreds of millions of dollars every year through these transactions alone.
