(Cairo = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Sang-hoon = It was assumed that negotiations for the release of hostages and ceasefire would be resumed through the mediation of the United States, Egypt, Qatar, etc., but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hamas had not made a clear proposal regarding the release of the hostages, but it had done so.

According to local media such as the Times of Israel, on the 22nd (local time), Prime Minister Netanyahu met with the families of the hostages taken by Hamas and said: “There is no real proposal from Hamas. (The proposal to release the hostages) is not true.”

“I’m speaking as clearly as I can right now because there are so many inaccurate stories that concern you about the hostage issue,” he said. “Rather, we have some suggestions, but we won’t go into details here.”

Previously, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that the United States, Egypt and Qatar were preparing a mediation plan to end the Gaza war and were pressuring Israel and Hamas to participate.

The mediation plan includes the gradual release of hostages, a ceasefire and discussions on the creation of a Palestinian state, the newspaper reported.

Previously, Prime Minister Netanyahu had stated in a video message the previous day that Hamas was demanding Israel’s surrender in exchange for the release of the hostages and that he would completely reject Hamas’ demands.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official, also responded to Netanyahu’s refusal to end the military operation, saying: “This means there is no possibility of the prisoners returning.”

Of the 240 hostages taken in Gaza by Hamas on October 7 last year, around 130 have not yet returned. The Israeli army knows that some of them are dead.

The families of the hostages protested to demand an end to the war and negotiations for the release of the hostages.

In particular, in recent demonstrations, they started shouting slogans for the resignation of the regime, and today they are intensifying their actions by entering the meeting room of the Finance Committee of the Knesset (Parliament) and interrupting the work.
