Netanyahu has to undergo surgery under general anesthesia for hernia

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to undergo surgery on Sunday evening. During a routine examination on Saturday, the 74-year-old was diagnosed with a hernia, Netanyahu’s office said on Sunday. According to the information, the procedure is carried out under general anesthesia. Justice Minister Jariv Levin, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, will meanwhile take over the duties of the head of government. A War Cabinet meeting was scheduled for Sunday evening.

Netanyahu’s office did not specify which hernia the prime minister was diagnosed with. The most common hernia is the so-called inguinal hernia. Most patients can leave the hospital quickly after hernia surgery and can return to normal physical activity after a few days or weeks. In the case of a hernia, for example, parts of the intestine, parts of organs or fatty tissue protrude through a gap in the abdominal wall.
