Nestle sold bottled water from sources contaminated with sewage and dangerous bacteria for more than 15 years, claims Mediapart. A study conducted by journalists indicated an unprecedented scale of fraud – the transnational corporation did this on purpose, Liter.kz reports with reference to Khibiny.
Nestle used water contaminated with faecal bacteria, Escherichia coli, and pesticides in France. The method of filtering this liquid was also illegal. The water was then bottled and sold as natural mineral water, including premium water – brands such as S. Pellegrino and Perrier are listed. The company earned about three billion euros from this. The consumer organization Foodwatch demanded that the culprits be punished. But Nestle disagrees with the results of the study and refuses to admit guilt.
The circumstances that came to light shocked the public. The fact is that, based on the EU directive on natural mineral water, the liquid bottled must be of pristine purity and come from underground, unpolluted sources.
As noted, in the last week of July, the European Commission plans to publish a report on this case, as well as to identify the plans of the French authorities in the current situation.
