President Nayib Bukele has launched an ambitious project that involves the inmates in the construction of housing and other productive tasks as part of the “Zero Idleness Plan”.
Since his recent presidential swearing-in on June 1, Bukelewho won with an overwhelming 85% of the vote, has pledged to revitalize the national economy.
Although it has been proclaimed that the country “He has been cured of gangs“, there is no intention to reduce anti-crime measures, including the “Zero Leisure Plan.”
This initiative seeks to have inmates, under the new penitentiary system, participate in tasks such as cleaning streets, beaches and repairing public institutions.
According to official data, more than 2,000 prisoners in the trust phase participate daily in these activities, such as erasing graffiti or contributing to the rehabilitation of infrastructure.
“The necessary conditions have been created so that 100% of those deprived of liberty are disciplined in productive activities,” highlights one of the government reports.
The main objectives include improving discipline and order in penitentiary centres, as well as facilitating the reintegration of prisoners into society and reducing recidivism.
According to journalist Marianne Schmidt of Meganoticias, “100% of penitentiary centers allow inmates to specialize in activities such as painting or shoemaking.”
Samuel Díaz, director of the Industrial Center, explained that the prisoners selected have no affiliations with gangs or criminal organizations, so they are chosen based on their previous skills and those acquired during their incarceration.
