Natural gas production in Libya has declined below its annual rate

Benghazi, March 23, 2024 (Libyan News) – The Italian news agency “Nova” revealed that Libya’s total annual production of natural gas has declined to between (10 and 13) billion cubic metres, compared to the previous rate of (15) billion cubic metres.

These data are based on reports from the National Oil Corporation, which show that gas production currently ranges between (30 and 35) million cubic meters per day, of which (24) million cubic meters are allocated to operate electricity stations.

In a related context, the National Oil Corporation announced that the total domestic consumption of natural gas amounted to about one billion (56) million cubic feet during the past (24) hours, including (838) million cubic feet for the General Electricity Company, and (104) million cubic feet. For the institution.

The volume of gas consumption by the Iron and Steel Complex and other small factories amounted to about (84) million cubic feet, while the cement factories consumed about (30) million cubic feet.

These developments indicate a decline in Libya’s total production of natural gas, as this is due to several factors, including the lack of investments in developing gas fields, the impact of political and security conditions on the sector’s infrastructure, with the increase in domestic consumption for operating electricity stations, in addition to the consumption of industrial sectors, One of the most important factors affecting the amount of gas available for export.

The decline in natural gas production is a strong blow to the Libyan economy, as gas constitutes one of the most important sources of income for the state (Al-Anbaa Libyan Tripoli).
