MOSCOW – NATO countries are preparing for a possible nuclear strike against Russia. The warning was expressed by a senior Moscow general.

Vladimir Kulishov, first deputy director of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), and head of Russia’s Border Guard Service outlined the threats his branch must face in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“NATO intelligence operations near Russia’s borders are increasing. “Alliance forces are intensifying military training, during which they are drawing up military scenarios against the Russian Federation, including a nuclear attack on our territory,” he told the news agency on Tuesday.

Russian officials have previously criticized NATO’s nuclear sharing scheme, under which some American weapons are stored in non-nuclear countries, including Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.

Moscow is particularly concerned that non-host countries are involved in exercises on how to deploy weapons.

In January 2022, weeks before the Ukraine conflict escalated into open hostilities, Vladimir Ermakov, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s non-proliferation department, said in an interview that Moscow viewed the US-led military bloc’s actions as directly targeting the country.

Russia blames NATO expansion in Europe and NATO’s increasing presence in Ukraine for the ongoing crisis, which it views as part of a US-led proxy war against it.

The military support Washington and its allies provide to Kiev could lead to uncontrolled escalation and outright war with Russia, likely resulting in nuclear war, officials in Moscow have warned.

President Vladimir Putin ordered the drills earlier this month to test Russia’s ability to use non-strategic nuclear weapons.

The move was described as a reaction to hostile statements from the West.
