NATO is considering putting its nuclear arsenal on alert – 2024-06-18 08:14:23

General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg has announced that the countries of the bloc are conducting negotiations on developing a large number of nuclear weapons and bringing them to a state of readiness. Stoltenberg attributed it to “threats from Russia and China”. He announced this in an interview with The Telegraph.

The head of the alliance noted that NATO should show its nuclear arsenal to the world in order to “send a clear message to its enemies”.

The Secretary General also noted that transparency in the nuclear sector should become the cornerstone of NATO’s nuclear strategy so that the alliance is ready for, in his words, a more dangerous world.

According to him, “NATO’s goal is, of course, a world without nuclear weapons, but as long as there are nuclear weapons, we will remain a nuclear alliance.”

Stoltenberg added that China is making large investments in the field of modern weapons, including nuclear weapons. According to him, China will increase the number of its nuclear warheads to 1,000 by 2030, and this, according to the Secretary General, means that the alliance has two potential adversaries armed with nuclear weapons: China and Russia.
