NEW YORK NASA has confirmed a sobering, albeit predicted, achievement with the release of global average temperature data last month.

2024 set a new record as the hottest May since global records began, as did April, March and every month since June 2023. The last time a month did not set a global record was May 2023.

As reported by IFL Science, Thursday (13/6/2024), even though the world is getting hotter quickly, that doesn’t mean that every month, or even year, is always hotter than the previous month.

Global average temperatures are higher in summer in the Northern Hemisphere, because land temperatures fluctuate more than ocean temperatures. Cycles such as El Niño/La Niña can cause a sharp acceleration of warming or a brief temporary cooling.

In the second half of last year, an upward trend caused by the buildup of greenhouse gases coincided with El Niño, creating the hottest summer in the Northern Hemisphere for 2,000 years. While October-December wasn’t as hot in absolute terms, each month broke records for that month.

It is important to note that these statements are based on data from NASA, and there may be slight differences with data from other organizations. However, the message is clear: our planet is warming at an alarming rate, and we need to take action to address climate change.
