On Tuesday (7/16), a meteor streaked past the city’s iconic Statue of Liberty before crashing high above Manhattan, NASA’s Meteor Watch said in a Facebook post.
Residents of the city have flooded the internet with reports of fireballs in the sky. Some describe the sensation of an earthquake, and others describe the sound of a thunderstorm.
“At 33,000 mph (54,500 km/h), the meteor dived at a sharp angle, just 18 degrees from vertical, passing the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating 29 miles (47 km) above downtown Manhattan,” NASA wrote on social media on Tuesday.
Doorbell camera footage uploaded to the American Meteor Society (AMS) shows a bright flash of light in the sky over Wayne, a small town in neighboring New Jersey. The AMS received a total of 43 witness reports of the meteor, according to its website.
NASA stressed that “this trajectory is very rough and erratic; it is based on a few eyewitness reports and so far no camera or satellite data to refine the solution.” No meteorites were caused, it added.
NASA said that “reports of military activity around the time of the fireball” would explain the reports of shaking and explosions.
