Muslim religious holiday: Eid alAdha, this Sunday

The Muslim festival Eid al-Adha is set for June 16 for this year 2024 and according to the press release published this week by the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Civil Service, it will thus be a non-working day and paid. But since this date of June 16 is a Sunday, work and school time is not cut by one day.

This Muslim festival, also called the great festival of sacrifice, has several names: Eid el-Kebir, Tabaski in the countries of West and Central Africa, Ghorban in Iran and Afghanistan, Arefa in Ethiopia, Kurban Bayrami in Turkey, Bakreed in India, Idy Be in Madagascar.

This holiday commemorates Abraham’s acceptance to sacrifice his son. During this holiday, Muslims are encouraged to sacrifice a sheep (in many countries this is no longer an obligation) and follow specific rituals for three days. Muslim traditions dictate that Eid al-Adha is a period synonymous with generosity towards the poor and loved ones.

In Madagascar, large cities with large Muslim communities will not fail to see gatherings of people of the Muslim faith for the great prayer.
