At a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined how to create a long-term solution to the conflict in Ukraine.
According to RT news agency, during a joint press conference in Alaska after the talks on August 15, Mr. Putin said that to achieve a lasting solution to the conflict in Ukraine, all root causes leading to the conflict must be resolved, Russia’s legitimate concerns must be considered, and the global security balance must be restored.
Previously, in a conversation lasting more than 2.5 hours, the two Russian and US leaders discussed restoring bilateral relations, and working towards a solution to the Ukraine conflict.
Mr. Putin recognized the US administration and President Trump’s willingness to engage in dialogue and find solutions, and emphasized the commitment of both sides to understanding the complexity of the situation.
The Kremlin boss also reiterated the view that Russians and Ukrainians are brotherly peoples and described the current situation as a tragedy, while affirming Moscow’s sincere desire to end the conflict.
According to President Putin, any sustainable solution must address the root causes of the conflict, and take into account Russia’s legitimate concerns. “It is necessary to restore a fair security balance in Europe and globally,” he emphasized.
The Russian leader agrees with Mr. Trump that ensuring Ukraine’s security is urgent, and is willing to cooperate on this issue. He hoped the mutual understanding reached in the discussions would pave the way for peace.
“We hope this will be received constructively by Kiev and Europe, and no obstacles will be created. There should not be any attempts to sabotage the expected process through provocations, or behind-the-scenes plots,” Mr. Putin emphasized.
For his part, Mr. Trump said the most important lesson from the negotiations is the reasonable opportunity to achieve peace. He hopes to meet Mr. Putin again soon, and said the Russian President shares his desire to end the conflict soon.
