Mourning in Mexican basketball; three players from Oaxaca die

Basketball in Mexico is in mourning after the death of three Oaxacan players in a car accident, which occurred last Wednesday in the vicinity of the El Mesón agency, in the municipality of San Andrés Cabecera Nueva, Oaxaca.

Alicia Zúñiga Jiménez, Azucena Aparicio and Jazmín Hernández were traveling together when the car carrying them overturned.

Las Oaxacan players, of the Santa Cruz Itundujia women’s team, were destined for the basketball tournament that would be held in San Antonio Atoyaquillo, as part of the patron saint festivities.

It was reported that the player Rebeca Cisneros Jiménez, who was also in the car at the time of the accident, is hospitalized.

Salomón Jara Cruz, governor of Oaxaca, expressed his condolences to the families of the three players who lost their lives.

“I have issued instructions to our government agencies to provide the necessary support and accompaniment. We are with you in this difficult time,” she posted on social media.

In turn, the Santa Cruz Itundujia City Council mourned the death of the three players, two of them from the municipality and the other from Oaxaca de Juárez.
