Mount Etna has woken up again

Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, erupted again on Sunday. As a result of the eruption, Catania International Airport, located at the foot of the volcano, was forced to limit the number of flights to six per hour. Some flights were delayed, cancelled or rerouted to other Sicilian airports, Liter.kz reports, citing Euronews.

On Sunday morning, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology recorded a fountain of lava erupting from the Voragine crater and a volcanic cloud heading east and southeast. Roads and settlements in the cloud’s path were covered in a thick layer of gray ash.

Mount Etna, on the east coast of Sicily, is experiencing a particularly active period. The volcano has erupted several times this summer. In July, Catania airport suspended operations twice because of ash covering the runways.

Etna has over 200 craters, and when one erupts, black volcanic ash falls on Catania and other nearby towns and villages. This is an inconvenience for residents, but is usually not a problem for tourists. Even during an eruption, Etna still has safe hiking trails and paths, but you should climb them with a certified local guide.

Let us recall that at the end of 2023, 11 people died in a volcanic eruption in Indonesia.
