Mother charged with death of 3-year-old daughter; left her in locked vehicle

MEXICO CITY (apro).- Sandra Hernández Cázares was arrested and charged with the death of her three-year-old daughter, Ily Ruiz, who was found unconscious in the family’s closed vehicle during a stifling heat wave.

On September 6, police responded to an emergency call in Anaheim, California. When paramedics arrived on the scene, a family member had already pulled the girl from the van, where she was with her mother, also unconscious. The girl died at the hospital.

Police found several empty alcohol bottles in the vehicle and Hernandez’s blood alcohol level was 0.30% when she was taken to the hospital, nearly four times the legal limit in California.

Authorities interviewed the mother and arrested her after she was released from custody. Hernandez was charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter and one felony count of child abuse with great bodily harm. Hernandez’s bond was set at $150,000 and she is currently being held at a Santa Ana detention center.

The local media outlet “Los Angeles Times” reported that the mother and her husband suffered the loss of their two children, Alaries Ruiz, 5, and Cyris Ruiz, 9, after a drunk driver ran over the family’s tent while they were on vacation, twelve years ago.

“A mother, who was robbed of the opportunity to see two of her children grow up because of a stranger’s selfish decision, will have to live with the fact that she will never be able to see her little girl grow up because of the choices she made,” District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement.
