Tragic Incident

An Arizona man tragically lost his life on Friday morning when he was unexpectedly attacked by a black bear while enjoying his morning coffee. Steven Jackson, 66, was fatally mauled by the bear, which was later killed by a neighbor attempting to save Jackson’s life, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.

Unprovoked Attack

According to the Sheriff’s Office, multiple witnesses confirmed that Jackson was peacefully sitting at a table on his property, where he was constructing a new home. The incident occurred in a remote and heavily wooded area. The bear, identified as a male black bear, attacked Jackson without any apparent provocation, dragging him approximately 75 feet down an embankment.

Neighbors’ Efforts

Neighbors who heard Jackson’s screams rushed to his aid, attempting to scare off the bear by yelling and honking their car horns. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain until a brave neighbor fired a rifle at the bear, finally forcing it to release Jackson. Tragically, Jackson succumbed to his injuries at that point.

A Predatory Attack

John Trierweiler, the public information officer for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, described the incident as a predatory attack. Such attacks are extremely rare, with only one other known fatal attack of this nature since the mid-1980s, according to the Sheriff’s Office. On average, there is only one fatal bear attack per year in the United States, as reported by the North American Bear Center.

Investigation Underway

Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the incident to determine the cause of the attack. Although it does not appear to be a case of a female bear protecting her cubs, further examination is necessary to establish what exactly transpired.

Black Bears in Arizona

Black bears are the only bear species found in Arizona, as confirmed by the US Forest Service. Generally, these bears tend to avoid human contact. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that there have been no other reports suggesting a threat to the public. Shooting a bear is illegal unless there is an immediate danger to personal safety or the safety of others.
