Morocco earns an additional $100 million from exporting fertilizer to Brazil

Brazil imported about 100 million US dollars of Moroccan fertilizers last May, bringing Morocco to third place on the list of suppliers of this Latin country at this level after Russia and Canada, according to data revealed by the Russian “Ria Novosti” agency, citing the Brazilian Statistics Authority. .

The same source explained that Brazil increased its supplies of fertilizers, especially from Moscow, which exported more than $304 million to Brasilia, while Canada exported fertilizers worth $124 million, and Israel and China each exported $62 and $60 million in fertilizers to the same country, respectively. .

For its part, a recent study by the national supply company in Brazil, “Conab”, monitored a significant increase in fertilizer imports by approximately 23 percent between 2019 and 2023, as Brazil received more than 42 million tons of fertilizer last year, compared to 34 million tons in 2019. .

The study, which was reported by Brazilian media, recorded that the state of “Mato Grosso” alone imported 16.6 percent of the total fertilizers imported from abroad, followed by the state of “Rio Grande do Sul” with 15.7 percent, followed by the state of “Paraná” with 13 percent. ,7 percent.

In the same context, data revealed by the Brazilian company “Fascomex”, which specializes in developing foreign trade programs, showed that Brazil is one of the largest importers of fertilizers in the world, as this product is of great importance to Brazilian agriculture, recording that Brazilian farmers imported 23% of One hundred percent of their needs at this level came from Russia in 2021, while they imported from Morocco 11 percent of their domestic needs in the same year, with a value exceeding 1.5 billion US dollars.

Reacting to the issue, Riad Ohtaita, an agricultural expert, said, “Brazil is fully aware that improving agricultural production and developing it to ensure food security first requires the availability of a set of inputs, most notably fertilizers,” adding that “Morocco is able, thanks to its phosphate reserves, to help Brazil and other countries in Achieving this endeavor.”

Ohtaita explained, “In the past few years, the Kingdom of Morocco has tended to double its exports of fertilizers, firstly in line with the increasing global demand for them in the face of the increasing severity of climate fluctuations, and also in line with the phosphate diplomatic approach that Morocco established based on its African field in order to deepen cooperation and strengthen partnerships.” With the countries of this continent, whose domain today includes more than 55 percent of arable land.”

The same agricultural expert stressed, in a statement to the electronic newspaper Hespress, that “Morocco enjoys an advantage and an advantage that guarantees its position in the Brazilian fertilizer market, as Russia and Canada, for example, produce the nitrogen fertilizers that the crop needs at its beginning, while Morocco produces and exports the phosphate fertilizers that… Brazil needs it to develop production, and therefore the two countries do not impose any competition on Morocco at this level.”

The same spokesman concluded that “fertilizers are a profitable card in Morocco’s hands to expand and diversify its partnership with a group of countries, led by Brazil, as they constitute an important entry point for developing relations and improving bilateral cooperation, especially with regard to trade exchanges.”
