Moroccan scenography director Abdelmajid El Hawass said, “The emergence of scenography came after the successive graduation of groups from the Higher Institute of Theatrical Art and Cultural Revitalization, and one of its features is that it took us away from the traditional concept of decoration.”
Al-Hawas explained, during his participation in the confrontation program “FBM”, which is prepared and presented by critic and media personality Bilal Marmid, and broadcast on the Medi 1 TV channel, that “scenography is no longer associated only with decoration, but rather it is originally part of writing (visual writing, audio writing…).” He stressed that Morocco has become a role model in this field compared to other Arab countries.
In a question about the extent of proper use of scenography in current artistic works, Al-Hawas said, “What is most important at the present time is the shift from traditional perceptions that rely on the hierarchy between the director, the decorator, and those charged with dress, makeup, and lighting…”, pointing to the openness of scenography in recent years to modern technology, “But this does not mean that all businesses employ it in the correct and effective way.”
The same spokesman explained that “the responsibility for the failure of a work is not borne by the scenographer, but rather by the team, especially the locomotive commander, in light of the financial constraints associated with production,” adding that “the focus at the present time is on quantity rather than quality.”
The graduate of the first batch of the Higher Institute of Theatrical Art and Cultural Revitalization stressed that “from 1990 until today, a number of good things have been achieved, including the study of scenography and its development at the training level at the institute, which resulted in the emergence of very important experiences, knowing that establishing a specific experience essentially requires setting An artistic project at the level.”
The “Confrontation Program Guest” believes that “direction and scenography are intertwined with each other,” pointing out that “one of the old traditions is that the director is that retired actor who is no longer able to perform the first role in a work, while the question that must be asked is: Who is he?” Who is most qualified to direct? Given the great role played by the scenograph.”
Regarding the reality of the artistic field in the city of Taza, Abdel Majeed Al-Hawas explained that “this city has a group of important energies in singing, acting, and other things… but the artist’s survival within that city hinders his development due to his confinement to the narrow field.”
Al-Hawas added, in the same context, that “a group of young energies in the city of Taza are working and striving with their own simple capabilities,” noting that “practitioners in the theatrical field in the city have abandoned the field after they became tired, and their excuse for that is that art is no longer of any benefit to them.”
Commenting on his work with the people of Taza in the artistic and theatrical field, the same spokesman said: “For our part, we are always ready to organize workshops and work with young people, but the continuation of these initiatives remains dependent on the entities that organize the forums.”
