This Monday, the former governor of Coahuila, Rubén Moreira questioned the reform of the Judicial Branch.
“Wanting judges, magistrates and ministers to be elected by popular vote is a great risk to the autonomy, independence and functioning of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.”
Moreira initially stated that there were already open parliaments, “there were several,” pointing out that in the following ones it is not clear whether other reforms will be included, such as the professional minimum wage, the guaranteed minimum wage, and the rights of indigenous peoples.
The current coordinator of the PRI bench in the Chamber of Deputies questioned whether the parliaments will serve to change something “because we have the experience in which we have been day by day and I don’t know a single thing, a major example is the budget issue.”

He stated that “there is no other country in the world that does what is wanted to be done here. Bolivia has been tried as an example, but Bolivia is not a Federation and it has also failed. Some federal entities of the United States have been tried as an example, but there the federal system is not designated as it is wanted to be designated here and The voting system is going backwards because parties or factual powers intervene“.
He spoke that the nature of the Mexican system is very different from that of the United States and the preparation is also different.
López Obrador’s reforms
The former governor explained that some of the initiatives sent by President López Obrador are already being discussed in the commissions, which are divided into those that rule and those that give their opinion, currently being in the second so those that are not ruled end up being discarded and a new one will have to be presented.
He pointed out that there are several, such as that of genetically modified organisms, “which have to do with the economy; the dissolution of autonomous bodies, for example those in charge of freedom or in terms of transparency or in terms of good economic competition.”
Moreira stressed that it was his reform that the initiatives did not pass to the next Legislature “since they were causing chaos”, so before the discussion came, it was proposed that they be eliminated “because they were of no interest to the legislator.”
Therefore, the procedure “from now until the last (day) of August” will have to be covered.
Between ‘steamroller’ and taking them into account
In an interview with journalist Mario Maldonado, Moreira expressed that Claudia Sheinbaum “is going to be head of state, I would recommend that she act as such and that she realize it and we all realize something very interesting, although she had a lot of difference in votes In the Chamber of Deputies the difference with the opposition is not so much, it is 54-46… to go for such a radical change, it does not have more than 50% of the population’s vote to legitimize it, I think it would have to be reflected. “.
