More than 39,000 dead in the war in the Gaza Strip, according to Hamas

Mexico City police special operations chief Milton Figueroa was killed in an attack in a suburb of the capital on Sunday, local authorities said.

“As a result of a cowardly attack that occurred in Coacalco, State of Mexico, my colleague and friend Chief Commissioner Milton Morales Figueroa lost his life,” reported Pablo Vázquez, local Secretary of Security, in X.

The officer, who was in charge of intelligence tasks against organized crime, was on a street outside a chicken shop when a man approached him and attacked him with a firearm, according to images from security cameras in the area.

“Milton was in charge of important investigative tasks to protect the peace and security of the inhabitants of Mexico City,” wrote Mexico City Mayor Martí Batres in X.

He said that the capital’s authorities are working with the prosecutor’s office of the neighboring State of Mexico to arrest those responsible.

In the megacity, small cells dedicated to drug trafficking and other crimes such as extortion and smuggling operate, in addition to having connections with large drug cartels such as the Jalisco Nueva Genración, one of the most powerful in the country.

According to local media, Figueroa’s work helped dismantle local gangs and seize significant quantities of drugs.

Several police chiefs in states hit by criminal violence have been assassinated in recent years.

There have been few attacks against authorities in the capital, although in June 2020 Omar García Harfuch, then Secretary of Security, survived an unprecedented attack on one of the main avenues of the capital.

The official, who has been appointed federal security secretary in the government of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, which begins on October 1, suffered minor injuries but three people lost their lives in the attack.

The Jalisco Nueva Genración cartel was identified as responsible for the attack, for which a dozen people were arrested.

Since December 2006, when the federal government launched a controversial anti-drug military offensive, more than 450,000 murders have been recorded, according to official figures.
