More than 300 people have been buried in a landslide in Papua New Guinea – 2024-05-27 22:38:37

More than three hundred people have been buried under the rubble of a landslide in the northern part of Papua New Guinea. Local media reported on Saturday (May 25) that more than 1,100 houses were buried under the ground in the terrible landslide in the remote village. British news agency Reuters reported this news.

A terrible landslide occurred in Kaokalam village of Inga province on Thursday around 3 am (May 24). More than a hundred died in that incident. The death toll may rise further.

The Post Courier newspaper of Papua New Guinea quoted the country’s member of parliament, Aimos Akam, as saying that more than 300 people have been buried underground in a landslide in the Pacific country north of Australia. Besides, 1 thousand 182 houses have been buried.

Akem did not immediately comment on the casualty on social media.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said on Saturday that more than six villages have been affected by landslides in the Mulitaka region of Inga province.

A spokesperson for DFAT said in a statement that the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby is in contact with the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) Authority to inquire about the number of casualties and damage.

According to the report, all the roads have been closed due to this landslide. So the only way to reach the spot is by helicopter.

Prime Minister James Marape said disaster officials, defense forces and the Department of Works and Highways are helping with relief and recovery efforts.
