Santiago. 11/7/2024More than ten thousand Walmart workers are on strike. The labor conflict has paralyzed and closed at least 150 Líder, Express, aCuenta and Central Mayorista supermarkets.

The mobilization is based on a negative response to the wage adjustment, the demand for respect for labor rights, clauses on break rooms and cafeterias for food, and the decision of the American consortium not to want to advance in dialogue with the workers.

A statement said the consortium’s proposal to the lawsuits “does not contain salary increases or CPI adjustments to wages and benefits. In addition, the termination bonus offered is considered insufficient compared to previous agreements.”

The president of the National Federation of Walmart Workers, Karen González, He warned that “the company had no intention of negotiating. We, from day one, from the first meeting, immediately said that this ‘should be a negotiation, let’s talk’, and they did not want to talk.”

Regarding the strike, the leader stated that “we requested a five-day extension to continue talking, but immediately (the company) said no, inciting us to strike.”

Karen González revealed that “we wanted to present a counterproposal and the company never agreed. Yesterday we brought it back. In our negotiation project, we asked for a 20% increase in workers’ benefits. As of yesterday, our counterproposal was lowered by half, to 10%, and we intend to continue talking.” There was no reaction from Walmart representatives.

The National Federation of Walmart Workers is one of the unions that operate in the consortium, groups together around 11,500 members and has always maintained vigilance and attention regarding labor rights, salary updates and respect for workers’ rights.

The labor dispute could last for about fifteen days. The company said that “we have a contingency plan so that the period of stoppage of the affected supermarkets has the least impact on the normal operation.”

Karen González said that “there are no monthly increases, they are not valuing the work of the management of the supervisors, they are taking away clauses that are very important to us, such as the cafeteria; and everything that is monthly money. They are not even increasing our benefits based on the CPI.” This is largely the origin of the workers’ strike at Walmart.

“We are not here to accept any crumbs. From day one we had every intention of reaching an agreement with them, but they did not want to move forward. It is not just about money, but also about our dignity,” the union said.
