Ja Morant suffered a shoulder injury during Saturday’s practice, missing the next day’s road win against the Phoenix Suns. Further tests were carried out which highlighted a tear and the need for shoulder surgery. Morant’s season is over, but he is expected to recover by the start of next season.
Morant missed the first 25 games of the season due to suspension. The Memphis “Grizzlies” won just six during this stretch, the same as the nine games with Morant in the lineup. The team’s star averaged 25.1 points, 8.1 assists and 5.6 rebounds.
Morant became the second Grizzlies starter whose season ended prematurely due to surgery. Steven Adams, who has not played since January last year due to a right knee injury, underwent surgery already during the preparation phase.
This is the first season of Morant’s five-year, $197 million contract.
