The Delhi High Court was approached by the Congress seeking judicial intervention against a penalty of Rs 105 crore for income tax irregularities for assessment year 2018-19. But the bench of Justice Yashwant Verma rejected the plea saying that the court does not see any good reason to interfere in this case.
The Income Tax Department has started taking action following the complaint. Transactions on the account have been effectively stopped. In this context, Sonia Gandhi said on Thursday that Modi is trying to cripple the Congress financially. However, he said that despite this planned action against the Congress before the Lok Sabha polls, they will not withdraw from the fight against the BJP.
According to Income Tax Department sources, they owe a total of Rs 135 crore as penalty and interest of Rs 30 crore to the Congress for income tax irregularities for assessment year 2018-19. Rahul’s party counterclaimed that the Income Tax Department had levied a fine against the branch organizations including the Youth Congress for very minor irregularities related to income tax returns (cash of Rs. Which is clearly ‘political vendetta’.
On March 8, the Appellate Tribunal dismissed the petition seeking a stay on the Income Tax department’s action against the Congress bank accounts. The Congress leadership alleged that after that the Income Tax Department irregularly deducted Tk 105 crore as penalty from their bank account. Subsequently, transactions in those accounts have virtually stopped after the Delhi High Court dismissed the stay plea.
Congress alleged that at the end of March 2023, their bank account had 162 crore rupees. Also, BJP had 5 thousand 425 crores in its account. But no income tax was deducted from BJP.

On the morning of February 16, AICC treasurer Ajay Maken first complained that youth congress and other branch organizations had been demanded a penalty of Tk 210 crore for irregularities related to income tax returns by the concerned department.
