The quarter finals of the two teams were already confirmed. The fight between Mohammedan and Abahani was more about prestige than being the best of the group. Mohammedan won the fight between the two most popular clubs in the country.
Today (Tuesday) at the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Stadium in Gopalganj, Mohammedan defeated the white-blacks 2-1. With this victory, Alfaz Ahmed’s team will play in the quarter finals as ‘B’ group champion.
Last year on May 30 in the final of the tournament in Comilla, Mohammedan wrote a comeback story defeating Abahani to become champions after 14 years. Eight and a half months later, the white-black and azure-blue met again. This time the smile of victory is on the faces of Alfaz’s disciples.
St Vincent’s forward Cornelius Stewart put Abahani ahead in the 39th minute. He scored with a great placement after the ball extended by the Brazilian Washington.
Mohammedan changed the picture of the match after the break. From the beginning, Abahani was suppressed by white and black. Mohammedan returned to the match in the 50th minute. Emmanuel Sund scored after Muzafarrov’s cross.
Within three minutes, Mohammedan advanced dramatically in the match. Emmanuel Sunday did the job with a tap from Hassan Murad’s throw from the right before Doso Sidi of the Ivory Coast headed the back of the post.
After falling behind by 1-2 goals, Abahani could not even try to return to the match. On the contrary Mohammedan played better football than them and created opportunities to widen the gap. In the end, Abahani could not avenge the loss of Comilla. Even though the venue has changed, the fate of Akashi-Nil has not changed.
